Small bowel obstructions (SBO) are a leading cause of admission to general surgery, posing the problem of the aetiology and treatment based on the diagnosis. More than 300 patients were admitted for SBO in 2011 in our institution.

In the second one, occlusive picture was caused by multiple adhesion phenomena between the sigmoid colon and the right ovary as result of abdominal hysterectomy. Had an ostomy reversal surgery 7/31, developed the SBO and had an unsuccessful second surgery 8/11. Had 2 NG tubes placed during the 17 days I was in the hospital. I had one prior in January when I had to have the colostomy. They are awful. Non-adhesional SBO contributed to 17.4% of SBO cases (n=8). These were further subdivided into SBO secondary to (a) hernias and (b) tumours. Those secondary to hernias made up 10.9% of the total SBO numbers (n=5).

Adhesions are fibrous bands of scar tissue. Many occur secondary to previous surgery or intra-abdominal inflammation (particularly pelvic)*, however they can also be congenital. They are one of the main causes of small bowel obstruction, accounting for around 60% of cases, and are also associated with female infertility and chronic pelvic pain.
